What is the Best Honey?

I have friends all over the world who eat different varieties of honey on their travels then report their findings back to me. Each one tells me it is the best they have ever tasted and each one is yet another exciting discovery.

What I can tell you is that through scientific research, their findings, my reader’s own stories and indeed my own experiences I can narrow down the results for you quite easily.

In today’s modern world the word "organic" is frequently used as we all become more aware of the benefits of eating and growing organic produce. Organic Honey is not that easy to find.

Oh yes, there are mass producers of honey who make these claims and some are cheeky enough to say as much on their labels. At other times they will try to entice you by calling their honey "quality honey", the golden rule is to remember you get what you pay for!

There are some true organic honey’s but before writing about them I needed to check my facts before sending you off to your local health food store. I hope you find my Organic Honey article helpful, this was written to arm you with the knowledge you need and a few choices to help you choose.

The best honey for its health benefits as my research has taught me is by far local raw honey from a beekeeper that hopefully lives nearby you. This is considered nature’s best honey.

It isn’t too much of a problem if there isn’t one nearby as many stockists are only too happy to stock the best Raw Honey in your area for you.

This type of honey is or should be sold to you in its natural state, straight from the hive. Any good beekeeper will sell you this; most of them give it away to friends and family so get yourself a beekeeping friend as soon as possible or even consider taking it up as a hobby!

This honey has never been heated or strained so none of the nutrients, enzymes antioxidants, minerals and goodness has been tampered with or destroyed. TIP: If you like tea and honey or any kind of hot honey drink always allow this to cool off a bit before stirring in your honey.

It will still contain bits of pollen which is also highly nutritious and traces of Propolis which is the worlds top natural antibiotic. Please don't allow this to put you off, however, if a little unsure your beekeeper will pass it through a fine mesh to collect these ingredients for you first.

Beekeepers believe eating their own raw honey is the reason they don’t suffer too much with arthritis, have healthy hearts and in general certainly appear to live longer and healthier lives than some of us.

Eat or drink honey every day, this really helps to keep you in tip top shape and healthy. It is packed with nutrition which helps give you an energy boost at any time of the day.

I now buy local honey from my friends but also like to try different types of honey from time to time. One of my latest purchases was an almost pure white honey, very unusual and very sweet but had been produced locally. Would you like to see where I buy raw honey?

There have been so many advances in scientific research over recent years into the medical benefits of honey which are why most of us have heard of Manuka Honey.

This honey receives a lot of press because there is a dedicated research team headed by Professor Peter Molam in New Zealand who spends almost his entire time testing this honey. His research has shown Manuka to have incredible healing powers.

But there other Honey Varieties which claim and have the proof to have just as much healing ability it’s just that they don’t receive the same amount of attention. I’m pretty sure that is about to change

One such honey is called Ulmo Honey from Chile; it is essentially a tree honey which interested scientists at the Pontifica Universidad Catolica de Chile, the University of Chester in England and a research company in Germany. After extensive testing their findings and results were exciting and impressive as a welcome addition to the family of medical grades of honey.

We now also have a brand called Medihoney which in all fairness is Manuka based. Scientists Dr Arne Simon and Dr Kai Sofka from Bonn University Children’s clinic, Germany, have been amazed at the success of the use of this honey particularly for the healing of wounds.

Lifemel Honey, this was originally invented by Dr. Alexander Goroshit a Russian immigrant, who moved to Israel and successfully continued with his invention and it is now selling fast.

It too has been scientifically tested and a report in the Journal of Medical Oncology concluded it is a safe and effective method of preventing chemotherapy induced pancytopenia, for those who suffer some forms of cancer, and in particular Leukemia.

We all know that throughout the centuries honey has been used in the beauty industry and some of these products today are vastly over priced mainly because they are cashing in on the often "minute amount" of honey they add to their products.

They know by adding this in their list of ingredients that this will help their products sell. Some do work and some don’t. Try not to be taken in by the "hype" which often states "Contains the Best Honey".

I personally use raw honey for helping to turn back the years. But if shopping for honey beauty products the ones I trust the most are those produced with Manuka or the amazing Burt’s Bees range.

Most varieties of raw honey have the ability to heal cuts, burns and wounds stopping infections from forming healing them and even reducing scarring of the skin quite dramatically. Honey has also been proven to promote healing on post operative scars and I can vouch for that as I have used it myself.

To cure my own daughters eczema, a horrible skin infection I did use Manuka because at the time it was the best honey, however, I did also use a pure Propolis cream. This combination is also extremely worthwhile for the millions of people plagued with acne, pimples and zits.

In all honesty most of them are, as long as they are good quality honey. They definitely help to relieve the itching in the back of the throat that can drive people mad and giving those sleepless nights! However, most of us find relief with a glass of comforting warm honey and lemon.

Researchers from the Penn State College of Medicine conducted an experiment into Buckwheat Honey on young children who were suffering with upper respitory infections and severe coughs. They conducted a scientific trial which proved the children who took buckwheat honey were vastly improved.

Again we arrive back to local raw honey if you are one of those who dread the onset of the pollen season. The watery eyes and dripping noses, the itching and coughing can all be caused by local pollen spores drifting around.

This is slightly more difficult to answer as this depends on many factors. The main one of course would be whether your own doctor or nutritionist will allow you to eat honey in your particular diet.

Quite a lot of diabetic diets do include eating honey but I must stress the importance of checking this out before, especially if you have only recently been diagnosed.

I would use any good honey except for a good medical grade honey. There is such a variety out there to choose from.

Acacia Honey does appear to be amongst the favourites for Honey Recipes because it mixes easily with other liquids due to its high fructose level.

However, there are darker honey's such as Buckwheat which some use in place of dark treacle. And Strawberry tree is not very sweet which would make it a good choice for savory dishes.

If we were to ask honey connoisseurs the same question individually they would answer it as Artisanal Honey, they would be proud to name it and this to them would be the best tasting honey.
