Honey recipes are almost as old as man and certainly many cooks enjoy cooking with honey and baking with honey because it is such an easy, healthy, way to enjoy the benefits of eating honey whilst cutting out the unhealthier choice of sugar and sugar substitutes.

When man first discovered this amazingly sweet, healthy, sticky golden colored treat they were quite possibly stung a few times by the honey bees they were robbing! Not to be put off by this many of them became experts in the art of beekeeping and they learned to get along together.

Because this golden colored treat was exceptionally sweet it must have become popular for making their probably bland foods taste just that bit nicer. They could not have known or realised then that their early discoveries would become a hit worldwide and would see many honey recipes develop throughout the coming years and centuries in our ever developing world.

Honey will enhance the flavor of many of your home-made foods, try as an added ingredient when mashing cooked butternut squash or pumpkin, drizzling over many foods, spread on hot crusty bread, beating in a little with mashed banana for an incredibly healthy sandwich or using as a glaze over vegetables roasting in the oven. Who hasn’t heard of honey roast vegetables, delicious!

I often wonder how great it would be to have a time machine and travel back to the very first time honey was used for cooking purposes! What we do know is that making honey wine was probably one of the first honey recipe inventions which came about by complete accident when someone left honey in water to ferment in the hot sun.

There are so many different kinds of honey available to us today that there is always a variety of flavours to enhance our honey recipes, however, I always advise that you buy a good raw honey if possible from local beekeepers or failing that a good organic honey which has not been blended with any other substance. It pays to check the labels on each jar you buy.

Baking with Honey is associated with Cakes and Desserts and your cakes will stay moister for far longer.

Cooking with Honey is more associated with BBQs, Basting Meats and making Delicious Marinades, Glazes and Dips.

Making the Most of
Your Honey

Today we are becoming far more aware that eating good nutritious food is vital for keeping us fit and healthy, honey nutrition is an important part of mine and my family’s needs.

We, that is me and my family, follow our own honey diet which we invented together after discovering both the health benefits of honey and another bee product called Propolis. You can read my story about these discoveries on my health benefits page.

Over many years now I have become so passionate about the benefits of eating honey particularly as a substitute for sugar which I have discovered is the main reason for the dreadful implications of the symptoms of obesity and the ever increasing problems of heart disease. Using honey recipes instead of sugar recipes are beneficial for a huge amount of modern day health conditions.

I experiment with my own recipes with different varieties of both raw and organic and discovered that light colored runny honey is best for marinades, stir fry’s, dipping sauces and drizzling over food. Darker (but not exclusively) and thicker honeys I think are best for baking with honey. The least it is heated the best nutritional value is kept.

Those jars of honey you may have sitting in your kitchen cupboards are responsible for many other types of honey recipes besides the tasty eating variety. If you have a jar buried at the back of your cupboard, take it out, it really doesn’t matter how long it has been there because honey has an extensive shelf life.

Try making your own honey cough medicine, if you have some buckwheat honey even better. Treat your skin to a homemade beauty product for giving and keeping your skin free from skin infections. It’s amazing isn’t it when you take a look at most beauty products to discover their recipes often contain honey.

Of course the most famous medicinal honey is the infamous Manuka honey which is used extensively by the medical profession once again. This is largely due to the extensive work conducted by Dr Peter Molam from New Zealand.

His medical honey recipes are used to treat patient’s skin to a fast healing process after operations and severe burns. There is also Ulmo honey available to us now, this is becoming known as the New Manuka!

Cooking with Honey

When cooking with honey a generally easy method for substituting that sugar is to use 8oz of honey for 7oz of sugar. Reduce any liquid in your honey recipe by 3 – 4 tablespoons and lower the heat of your oven a little. For example 350 degrees F to 325 degrees F. This works just fine when cooking cakes.

Yum Yum Recipes ~ Sweet ones

Apart from your honey recipe cakes you can use your honey to make delicious desserts such as ice-cream and include a couple of dollops in your healthy smoothies made with skimmed milk or yoghurt and blended with your favourite fruits and berries. Try stirring it into a bowl of hot oatmeal for a quick, nutrious and healthy start to your day.

If you are partial to a sweet cup of tea but health conscious too, substitute that sugar or sweetener and enjoy a cup of tea and honey. Pour it over any dessert you like, zing it up even more, melt a little chocolate, stir in some of your honey and drizzle it over yoghurt or ice-cream.

Be inventive like some of my readers who have sent in their own favourite honey recipes which you can see towards the end of this page. And why not share your favorite honey recipe with us, the entry form is below and you could win a prize of a delicious jar of honey.

Here is a healthy honey recipe treat, try rolling fresh bananas in honey and coat with finely chopped nuts, wrap these in greaseproof paper and pop in the freezer. If you have any lolly sticks insert these length wise first and you will have your own home-made health ice-lollies.

Honey Recipes ~ Savoury Style

There are endless recipe books which will take you through the steps of baking with honey; you might like to try one of my own favourites that of honey bourbon chicken.

And one of the nicest ways to benefit from eating honey is to add it to your salad dressings especially tasty when blended with mustard. I have included a honey mustard recipe or two on my website for you to try, they definitely zing up those salad leaves!

Everyone loves a bar-be-cue don’t they! Cooking with honey is easy to use here too. Some of my own honey recipe inventions include bar-be-cue marinades, would you like to check these out too? These can be seen on my honey barbecue chicken page and are truly mouth-watering!

Indian curries which are a big favourite often contain ginger and garlic along with a good dollop of honey. To preserve the nutrients in honey it is perfectly fine to add this at the end of the cooking process in hot savoury recipes, just stir a little into your curry or stew before serving.

Honey recipes can also be adapted for your fish dishes, add a little honey to soy sauce, olive oil or a little melted butter with some freshly chopped herbs and drizzle over your fish. A really nice recipe is a spoonful of honey blended with freshly squeezed lime or orange juice and chopped coriander.

Delicious over a nice piece of fresh cod or over lamb or pork chops. There are really no limits to what you can do with this sauce. And that plain piece of fish or meat becomes sensational; your family will love you for it.

Honey Recipes ~ for Sports Enthusiasts

The National Honey Board who have loads of mouth-watering honey recipes for you to try conducted a study into the endurance of cyclists, some were given a simple honey recipe of honey mixed with water and others were given a placebo. The results were very impressive as those who drank the honey water completed their 40 mile race by an incredible 3 minutes.

Dr Richard Kreider formerly a director of Exercise and Sports Nutrition discovered honey maintained far better glucose levels in those who had endured a 2 hour workout!

There is a question very often asked, “Is Honey Good for You?” It most certainly is so get your pinny on and be creative in the kitchen by either trying the honey recipes on this page or inventing your own. Have fun!
