How are Cheerios Made?

I just love it when kids ask questions like these but out of interest even I wanted to know how cheerios are made!

It appears the whole grain contents (mainly oats) are ground into a flour with small amounts of starch, sugar and salt. These ingredients are mixed with water to form a dough which are then shaped into little circles.

These little circles are then pushed through machinery (also called “dies”) which create the little “Os”

These are then partially dried and puffed up with high pressure steam which forces them to puff up, a bit like popcorn!

As the drying process continues they are sprayed with vitamins and coated with honey.

Who Invented Cheerios?

Originally called Cheerioats this invention apparently nearly didn’t happen! We have Lester Borchardt, a Minnesota physicist to thank for this invention. He worked at General Mills for 36 years and was responsible for revolutionizing the breakfast cereal industry.

Gosh this man was clever; he even developed a process to fortify milk with vitamin D. It is no wonder honey nut cheerios are so good with that bowl of ice-cold milk!

As far as breakfast cereals go cheerios nutrition is an excellent choice for us all and if you really do have to munch on a sweet snack then these are absolutely ideal.
