Burts Bees products were borne from a chance meeting between a beekeeper residing in Maine, USA and a young adventurous girl who happened to be hitchhiking in the beautiful leafy area of New England. |
She stopped for a while living in basic shelter with not even a tap to turn on water. This was extremely difficult for her as she was also a struggling single mother too.
Burt Shavitz, this is his full name, met the young hitchhiker, an artist called Roxanne Quimby whilst on her travels. He was selling gallons of honey from the side of the road.
This chance meeting between them engaged them in a long conversation about Burt’s passion for the honey bee.
He told her everything he had learned and she was extremely fascinated having never given much thought to these little insects before.
The more he told her and the more she learned the more intrigued she became, to the extent they decided to go into partnership and Burt’s Bees was the name decided upon to start their venture into the very successful Burts Bees Products on sale today.
This business has gone from strength to strength and you will find their products just about everywhere. Their first venture was candle making. Together they produced high quality beeswax candles which were a sell out product.
Today Burts Bees Products include a huge range of completely natural skin products produced by honey bees. Their face creams, body lotions, lip balms and hair care products often contain royal jelly and a whole lot of beeswax.
Their aim was to produce products which promise 24 hour moisturizing for normal to sensitive skin. And all of them are wonderfully healing for the skin.
Even after all these years they have stuck by their principals that Burts Bees Products would be as natural as possible. In fact Burt’s Bees helped to establish guidelines called “The Natural Standard for Personal Hair Products”
They work closely with “The American Natural Products Association” and a few others who are also ethically like-minded.
So determined were they to be as natural as possible with their products they totally refuse to have anything to do with testing products on animals and they go even further by using recycled materials for their packaging.
So concerned about the disappearance of our honey bees, they spoke with the US Congress hoping to raise their awareness of the catastrophic events that would take place if our bees all became missing bees, they gave away 95,000 packets of wildflower seeds to the public which resulted in millions of extra flowers being grown.
This also served in helping to educate thousands of people who really hadn’t given too much thought as to what hopefully will not happen.
Burt’s Bees hope to educate everyone in time and are currently working with the BBKA who run an “Adopt a Beehive” program. All the proceeds will be used to fund more research into our honey bee’s demise, plus provide the information and education which is so badly needed.
