American Honey Tastes and Colors

by McKenzie Cavender
(Gray, GA)

My name is McKenzie Cavender, and I'm a 5th grader at Turner Woods Elementary School in Gray, Georgia.

I'm entering an essay contest through my 4H club. I would like to know how honeys around the United States differ in taste and color and if the richness of flavor increases with darker honeys. Thank you so much for your help.

American honey can taste and look very different depending on which state they come from and the source of nectar collected by honey bees.

It is said there are more than 300 types of American honey and if anyone can name them, send them to me please, you will receive a very special prize from me.

One of the most famous types of American honey would be Sourwood from the mountains of Georgia.

This can range in color from very pale to golden amber with a very distinctive “honey flavor” Then we have Tupelo which is also quite pale in color with a distinct floral taste.

Buckwheat is a very dark colored honey with quite a strong taste but amazingly good for healing up coughs and colds.

Californian sage honey, which is mild and herbal, but is said to be high up amongst the favourites of honey lovers.

Each type of honey whether it is from America or not will have its very own unique flavor because there are literally thousands of different nectar sources.

Perhaps you would like to read “American Honey Plants" written by Frank Chapman Pellett which quotes more than sixty popular American Honey’s all of which come from an amazing variety of honey bee plants. I have listed a few of them for you below.
